MasterPlumbers.com : Pipes : Quality Management of Rehabilitation Projects

Robert. Cadden
Australian Water Technologies Pty Ltd.

The deterioration of wastewater conduct systems and the need to restore them and meet ever increasing system performance standards is resulting in increasing application of trenchless technology in renovation projects.

The technology and techniques involved in these types of projects is new and not fully understood by clients who need to specify and manage rehabilitation projects. There is a need to improve the understanding of trenchless rehabilitation technology with regard to the materials involved and the installation requirements to ensure that the final product will meet the client needs.

In particular, it should be recognised that the application of trenchless technology in the field is entirely different to the installation of new conduits and so a new method of planning and contract management is required.

This paper will outline the issues involved with trenchless rehabilitation that should be understood by a client so that he can properly plan and manage a rehabilitation project. The paper also outlines how a performance based approach to contracting coupled with a quality management approach as used in normal production engineering can assist in meeting required project objectives.
