Yet others do not even have a code in this day and age nor a qualified
code inspector who has the power to arrest these misfits dabbling in this
field who think nothing of cross connections or improper pipe sizing.
If folks would demand to see the actual license and ask questions as to what
requirements are required to get a license then folks could expect more for
their hard earned money.
Do not take it for granted that if a person says they are a P&H contractor
that they are really qualified to work in your home where your life can
depend on their knowledge or skills.
Call your local building department and ask "what does it take to get a
plumbing, heating or drain cleaning license?". The results may surprise you.
Any boiler air handler or even a simple hot water heater installation should
be inspected by a qualified LMP/Licensed Stationary Engineer or certified
boiler inspector, not just taken for granted that the installer knows what they are
doing.
The Master Plumbing license is for the consumers protection NOT the plumbers.
So for your protection ASK what formal apprentice training did this Master
Plumber receive (10,000 hours is the normal) anything less is a joke.
I remember once the Manager of plant maintenance of United States Postal
Service in NY hired me to give them questions that a maintenance plumber
should know the answers to.
I gave him a mixture of codes and theory and basic math and simple drawing
with some plumbing mistakes.
In total I gave him slightly over 1,500 questions and said a helper should be
able to pass over half of these questions.
Imagine how pathetic it was to find that folks applying for the position of
"plumber" could not even guess 10 correct answers and zero applicants found
errors on the plan sheet.
Yet this same test was almost aced by a 5th year apprentice of the United
Association of plumbers and Steam fitters.
Now here these folks applying for this job said they already worked in the
field for several years in heating and plumbing in peoples homes and even had
documentation to prove their work records.
Now honestly how safe does this make you feel?
Again for your protection call your local building department and ask what is
required for a plumber or heating contractor to get a license.
Have a safe one.
