I have just recently heard of yet another franchise being created using a dead man's name and it made me stop and think about the time that I set up my own Company.
When I passed my first Master Plumbers exams, the building department asked me, "What is the name of the Plumbing Company?"
I said "S. Tieger of course, what other name would I use?"
The lady said, "Well a lot of folks choose to make up a name."
So I said, "OK, How about S.C.A.M?"
She smiled and asked, "Do you know what scam means?" I said, "sure, it means Sylvan's Cleaning AND Maintenance Or Sewer Cleaning And Maintenance SCAM!
She smiled from ear to ear and said, "S. Tieger is a wonderful name. It shows Integrity and that you plan on being in business for many many years."
I said, "Exactly, that is why I like dealing with Companies like Macy's as I know the founders name. FAMILY business is a good thing.
I also work for the Phillips Dodge foundation, another Proud name and a great account to do business with.
Hiding behind a franchise or a dead guys name is not what I really wanted to do when I started my Company. Was this dead man a steam fitter or a real licensed plumber?
Like "Thomas Crapper sewer and Drainage," NOW that has a nice ring to it.
I love working for my neighbors and I enjoy accounts calling me by my first name.
Recently, via computer, someone sent me a notice that he may change his company name to something really outstanding.
I asked why and he said it would be easier to sell later if he didn't use his own name.
I said, "OK, but do you think we should tell this to Ford Motor Company?
"Hey, let"s tell DuPont the name will never work and neither will Dodge trucks because Dodge doesn't sound politically correct." I said.
I said, "Let us compare VW and FORD over all car/truck/Lorry sales and see what the public prefers".
He said, "Well, my techs will like a new name." I then said, "WHAT TECHS?"? "Don't you do plumbing"?
After a few minutes he realized my point. If you're not licensed, you cannot say "plumber" in most Countries, but anyone can say "I'm a tech", unless he/she is doing plumbing.
Now, from working in this profession, I have worked with and for several shops during my career and the vast majority of plumbing shops had a living persons name.
I was thinking, if I really wanted to start a plumbing company and not use My God given name, what would I choose? THEN it hit me, INSPIRATION TIME.
I would move to jolly old England and call my Company the Benedict Arnold Technical World Wide Corporation. The Company would be SERVING only countries that recognize the thrown of England.
Then I said, "Well, England has a lot of plumbers now and America probably wouldn't open up it's arms to this name," so I said "OK. I'm Paul REVERE PIPING Corporation BUT, alas, the animal rights groups would boycott me.
They would complain, "Hey, look at this dude (bloke) who took a horse out of a warm stable at NIGHT to ride at break neck speeds to have some Town Cryer screaming the British are coming." SO WHAT, the BEATLES CAME and I love them as a singing group.
So I sat and pondered about another Name that was known around the world and I said to myself "how about "Ghengis Kahn"piping and heating tech services.
