Whenever I hire a plumber to do my service work on any heating system. I would ask them questions directly from "Steam Without Tears" or "Pumping Away" OR "The golden Rules of Hydronic Heating" and of course "Screwing up, 666 ways to go wrong".

I only wish Dan would put out a BASIC Business advice book, instead of the pure garbage I have read about plumbers learning to do taxes.

WHY NOT have plumbers learn their job first before they dabble in other professions?

Since we are only in June, it is NOT too late to try to get a handle on some of the right ways to install heating systems and the proper service of them.

There is a whole lot of information out there just for the asking. Including the most important aspect of heating systems, NEAR BOILER PIPING.

I hope that these new under slab failures act as a wake up call. All code officials should not only DEMAND licensing laws, BUT low water cutoffs installed on EVERY BOILER installed. With a manual reset and a means of testing these devices.

As more and more people enter the heating contractors market, we, as professionals should at least try to protect the general public from getting killed by these non code/non licensed folks dabbling in the heating field.

Think about it, someone installs plastic/copper/steel IMPROPERLY underground. Then a failure occurs. What is to prevent a boiler melt down with no provisions of a LWCO? (piping leaking under ground faster then the water can be replenished and BOOM! - melt down city)

When in doubt always hire a Licensed Master Plumber to double check the heating guys work as YOUR life may depend on it.

A lot of the oil companies also have what they call "Class A" oil burners installers license. This is a good thing as you know the installer at least knows his/her profession.

Always ask anyone working on your piping for a license whether it be an Oil installers license, a LMP (Licensed Master Plumber) or a stationary engineer license. This is for your protection.

You need protection from backflow (pollution of the potable water system). You need to properly size the flue/chimney piping. You need a properly sized Relief/Safety pop valve. There are spill switches for YOUR protection.

Hiring a licensed professional is ALWAYS the cheapest way to go.

Have a great summer.
