Well, folks more and more "heating guys" are out there doing whatever damage they can to unsuspecting clients. These heating guys were not happy enough causing all kinds of under slab leaks and damage. Now some are even looking to blow away the entire home also.
I see trucks roaming around looking for work with heating & piping painted on the side. They know there is very little codes for heating contractors to abide by and no heating enforcement on residential homes. They go as they learn OJT.
Many of the "heating guys" today have no idea of the right thing to do, even if it bit them on the butt. Very few would ever think of installing a LWCO, even on a hydronic system as it would add another $70 to the installation price.
Backflow prevention's, according to some "heating guys" are not required, UNLESS the job is being inspected.
It takes a certain amount of mentality, to convince a brain dead home owner to spend a fortune of money to bury piping that not only can never be serviced BUT also the heating guy has no idea what kind of carpeting the home owner will use later on to insulate the piping they buried. ANYONE can open a heating shop in many location and unfortunately, MANY folks do get into heating without bothering to even learn the simplest proven systems.
There was many a "heating/piping contractor" I came behind who thought nothing of just raising the pressure on a steam boiler to over 10 pounds. They have no idea about air venting and the proper location of venting.
Imagine, some franchises actually try to CON (get over, rip off) the general public that a "tech" can be trained in 12 weeks to be not only a drain cleaner, BUT a plumber and then throw in the heating aspect for a bonus.
There are some great manufacturers willing to enlighten the "heating" techs sharing a wealth of knowledge. One manufacturer representative that really impressed me is Wallace Eannace. These fantastic folks saved me from many sleepless nights with the "Problem Solver" and the STEAM BOOK (I can no longer get them ?)
They geared the education to the actual installer in plain language.
Another of my very favourite sources for heating education is Dan Holohan.
