You may recall that my previous article contained information for an estimator. Be aware that this web site contains a lot of good material, which you as an estimator can use in your day to day work.

However, there are certain events and conditions, which are unfortunately not taught, in our educational establishments, or is, classified information to the privileged few.

You may call it the school of hard knocks or some other term. For me it is time spent gathering data and information for use in future estimating projects. This information needs to be connected in some form or other to the original thoughts and calculations.

So what could be so different?

Consider these:
- Labour and manpower problems on your estimated project
- Site management problems
- Head contract management problems
- Materials supply problems
- Geo technical problems
- Financial and cash flow problems
- Transport and or plant problems
- Drawing interpretations
- Client expectations

And the list could go on.

Yes, indeed, as an estimator you will be directly involved with these problems. Most likely with the every day management of your company but nevertheless fingers will be pointed in your direction.

It is not the intention of this writer to do an in depth analysis of the problems stated above but merely to lift the lid on situations that you as an estimator may be confronted with.

As a Plumbing Estimator you will work in very close cooperation with management and without a doubt will be building strong bonds with the men in the field.

A few pointers at this stage may assist you in making sure your estimated project will reach its objective: TO MAKE A PROFIT.

Place yourself in projects already on line. Assist your field staff with obtaining the best possible prices for materials and sub contract plant or machinery. Of course you have kept contacts and identifiable items attached to your estimate. These can now be of assistance when sourcing labour, materials and plant.

Always keep your lines of communication open with management and field staff.
DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE YOUR POSITION IN THE SPHERE OF OPERATIONS.

This does not mean that you should have to defend your calculated figures and intentions at all times. Sure, you could and will make mistakes. But place yourself in such a position where your figures and worked out solutions support the ultimate goal, that is to make a profit.

Should something or some project not work out as you intended, such as;
- Sudden unexpected price increases
- Inclement weather conditions
- Break down of labour or manpower on site (strikes or lock-outs)

You could in your next project make a suitable entry to cover these unforseen situations.

A school of hard knocks does not give out certificates or diplomas. Instead it will make you a better estimator.

If you would like to communicate with me on this subject please do so.
