WORLD PLUMBING COUNCIL:
The WPC recently held its 2006 Annual Meeting in Chicago USA.
Here are a few snippets from the meeting.
World Health Organisation:
> Secondment of a Plumbing Expert to work at WHO in Geneva for two years.
>>WPC have proposed an Australian for the role and it appears that he is
acceptable to WHO.
>>The stumbling block is the cost to be born by WPC of US$250,000
(US$125,00pa x 2 years).
>>The Annual Meeting decided to put up US$50,000 from WPC reserves subject
to the balance of the first year being raised.
>>Two USA Organisations in attendance pledged US$10,000 each and since the
meeting another attendee has also pledged US$10,000 but there is still a
long way to go.
>>The starting date for the secondment is January 2007 but it appears that
this will need to be postponed by 3 months or so.
The WPC will be seeking to identify donor organisations over the next
couple of months.
> NGO (Non Government Organisation) Status.
WPC is hopeful that the WHO meeting in January 2007 will grant NGO status
on WPC.
> Health Aspects of Plumbing (HAP)
>>Stock of this publication now held in USA at IAPMO.
>>WPC will need to promote sales.
>>A pdf may be downloaded from
www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/publications/plumbinghealthasp/en/index.html
To-date some 4,000 copies have been downloaded.
VIC/QLD MPA Conference Cairns.
>>Syd Stolper USA (UA/Training) was invited to speak and attended with a
number of USA Contractors and Officials.
>>Syd reported that he had presented a paper on the UA Instructor Training
Programme and that it was well received.
>>Syd stated that an Australian delegation was to visit USA next year.
WPC 2006 Trainers Scholarship.
>>5 applicants from USA, Solomon Islands, Australia and UK.
>>The 2006 scholarship was awarded to Geoff Moore of Mt Druitt TAFE in NSW.
>>The original scholarship selection panel of three, including this institute,
was expanded to five by inclusion of two past scholarship recipients.
Lead in Plumbing Fittings.
It was reported to the meeting that impending California legislation was to
be enacted to limit the lead content of plumbing fittings to less than .25%.
It was further reported that much of the manufacturing industry was against
the Bill as it was full of misconceptions and did not target the items in
most need of amendment and control.
MEMBERSHIP:
Members are the lifeblood of any organisation and your Institute is no
exception. Your Institute Council took a decision to expand our exposure and
input to the national scene on behalf of the wider plumbing community. We
are working alongside and with the specialist organisations to maintain and
improve the standing of plumbers and plumbing. All this takes time, effort
and funding. What can you do? One thing that every member can easily do is
replicate themselves, introduce new members to the only truly national
organisation for the wider plumbing fraternity, the Institute of Plumbing
Australia Inc. Forward this newsletter to your associates, follow it up with
a phone call. If that is too hard just provide the names and contact details
of prospective members to the Secretary and we will do the follow-up.
Application forms are downloadable from www.plumbing.org.au/ipa_howtojoin.htm
