The super hot water was caused by one of more of the following. A bad upper thermostat, a bad lower thermostat, a shorted out upper element or a shorted out lower element. The elements can be test with the tank cold, but the thermostats have to have the water hot to check if they will open the circuits properly. : A 3 year old hot water tank 2 days ago started sending extremely hot water through the system with no change in the thermostat setting. Now it has ceased producing any hot water at all. Is this repairablewith a new thermostat or should the tank be replaced? Any and all comments very much appreciated.
