Hot Water Heater Pressure relief valve

Posted by Tom Engler on November 27, 1998 at 10:39:14:

From: Pennsylvania, USA

My gas hot water heater (5 years old) was dripping from the temperature-pressure relief valve at various times. I have replaced the valve, and the problem has now worsened. Even to the point of the valve staying open and flooding the basement. Will an expansion tank fix this problem ? As this has only been happening recently, Is this more of a problem with the heater itself or just thermal expansion ? With regular hot water use through the day from the sink, there is a steady drip from the valve. During showers, there is no drip as all of the pressure is being relieved. The hot water throughout has remained good, and the thermostat does shut down the heater properly. Could someone help me, as it is Thanksgiving evening, and I don't want to call for a plumbing emergency. Thanks.
