Check with local codes but it would be illegal to vent a gas fired appliance within the walls of the construction.

: I simply want to know if I must purchase a direct vent gas hot water heater (in my unused crawl
: space),as opposed to a regular model. The area where it will be placed is used only to store garden
: equipment,etc.
: When you enter from the outside door, enough room exists to stand up. The existing electric model is there
: against the outer wall.Note that plenty of ventilation is down in this areadue to a nearby window and
: other vents. Since regular gas models cost half what direct vent models do I hope to use one of those if
: possible.Can that be done?
