I was hoping someone would give a good answer to your question, but since no one has, I'll give my two cents worth.

My experiences and thoughts have always been the same as yours. I am surprised that, in all the years I have used plumbers putty, I have never had a problem or complaint or call-back as a result of that junk. But the few times that I have had to try to remove silicone from a faucet or sink has made me not want to use that either.

I hope other plumbers will comment.
