Your heater is old, this might be a good time to replace it.
Things can go wrong with a heater that cause the temperature/pressure relief valve to leak.
But if your problem is simply an old, worn out T & P valve...It is easy to replace.
Turn the water supply off.
Open a hot water faucet to relieve the pressure, then close the faucet (so there will be a vacuum on the heater tank.
Put pipe dope or teflon tape on the threads of the new valve.
Unscrew the old and quickly install the new one.
