the problem is more likely a burned out lower element that is bypassing the thermostat and overheating the water. If you have the tools to test it, check it out, otherwise just replace it and the problem should be solved.

: I have a Reliance 501 electric water heater in my home. The Model number is; 5 52 2SRS4. Serial number is; H87485273. I don't know how old it is, but I suspect it was manufactured in 1987, based on the Serial Number.
