Cistern Restoration

Posted by Shawn Mueller on September 27, 1999 at 10:51:57:

Hello,

I don't know if you can help me, but I'm currently in the "gathering information" stage about cistern
restoration. We are renting an old farm house and would like to restore a cistern that is here which
is about 30 foot deep. It is all good to go as far as the walls and so forth, but the bottom has to
be cleaned, and I have not been at the base yet to determine if the floor is concrete or not. My
problem is however, that the pump is out of commission. Apparently, it looks like a winding type
crank with a chain at the base and I don't have a clue as to how to fix it. My question is, I guess,
Do you have a clue as to 1) where to find a cistern pump, 2) instructions as to how it works
3) ideas on the floor of the cistern--should it be lined, plastered? etc. 4) instructions as to how
to make sure the water can be purified and clean as it will be caught from our gutter. I would
greatly appreciate any help you could give in this regard.

Thank you,

Shawn and Lynette Mueller
