All pipe is the same. You tighten it until it feels very snug, usually about the time you decide that you will not be able to go around another full turn. If you overtighten it, you run the risk of cracking the fitting.

: on black iron threaded pipe, 1 inch and down.....what is the proper fit of the threaded portion. In other words, how far do you screw it down, or how titght should it be??
